Antimicrobial Resistance

The human race has always been in war with bacteria, and the development of antibiotics in the 1940s gave us the upper hand. Today our last antibiotics start to surrender to microbe superbugs that evolved and developed resistance to current drugs.

Antibiotics are not only complex to develop, the most innovative new products also cannot be sold freely. This doesn’t present an appealing investment opportunity, and over the past 30 years pharmaceutical companies have significantly decreased their work developing new antibacterial therapies.We therefore need innovative screening programs and solutions to ensure that scientists work together to test promising treatments and bring them to market.

While laboratory scientists often do not have access to all unique and diverse habitats on Earth — a lot of local students and science aficionados do. The Mobile Discovery program is uniquely situated to capture this potential by supporting and promoting all aspects of antimicrobial research and education across the borders.


In Search of New Antibiotics

When you join the Mobile Discovery program, our team will provide you with a free Antibiotic Mobile Discovery kit that will allow you or your students to characterize chemical biodiversity of natural samples from local environments and participate in global health discovery efforts in search of new antibiotics.

Mobile Discovery kits contain no hazardous materials and participants use their own saliva as a source of nonpathogenic bacteria for screening. Once the assay is completed, participants record the results by photographing the assay plate and discarding the kit, therefore no biological samples or bacterial cultures are transferred or collected. Discovery and intellectual property rights remain with the person who performs the assay.

In summary, the Mobile Discovery program is giving you access to a simple technology to discover new antibiotics from a local environment of your choice. Whether you are a teacher, a student, or an ordinary citizen, you can assist scientists in discovering new antibiotics by submitting data, sharing experiences or spreading valuable information. Together, we will greatly benefit from having a lot more data to analyze and a pool of volunteer individuals willing to help.


Biodiversity as Source of New Drugs

Biodiversity is a unique characteristic of natural communities, both in terms of numbers and composition of species, as well as the vast arrays of bioactive molecules they produce. Discoveries for the advancement of medicine and understanding of the global health research constitute one of the most powerful ways in which biodeiversity can contribute to human society.

The degree of knowledge about biodiversity varies with both location and group of organisms (approximately 70% of the modern medicines are based on molecules discovered in nature!), but even today biodiversity remains a most mysterious and largely unexplored frontier. Often forgotten, extremely important discoveries have been made from organisms that were previously considered peripheral to human society, like Penicillin from a mold, Aspirin from a tree bark, or Captopril from a pit viper.

Although the planet Earth has an abundance of biological diversity, certain ecosystems have far more species than others. Certain groups of organisms are also especially rich in species, and we specifically aim to target our search and discovery efforts to those previously unexplored places.


STEM and Community Education

We also work directly with schools, universities, local groups, and ethnic communities to enable their participation in global health research by providing tools and sharing knowledge on how to develop regionally appropriate strategies for exploring and preserving biodiversity. Our main objective is to focus community efforts on projects to develop novel human health programs and sustainable economic options around education, drug discovery technology, and agricultural products.
